CEMETERIES

Cone (or Coon) Cemetery - Heiberger, Alabama

This Cemetery is not known to the University of Alabama's Cartography lab. When I was there at the cemetery, I was excited and forgot to get GPS coordinates. It is located about a 1/3 of a mile up in the woods off of Hwy 5 behind the Heiberger Community building which is a gated property. The Cemetery itself can be gotten to through what appears to be likely private land. It is unknown the name and contact of the owner.

This cemetery is said to contain mostly "blacks", many of whom were born during times of slavery . Until these names are researched, I can provide no positive evidence nor can I deny the story.  Also, with so many of the stones not visible, it is impossible to give accuarate statistics. I can say that the two matching stones that were towards the front edge of the cliff overlooking the river near the peak and skinniest part, of William and Elizabeth Cone, were white slave owners. Elizabeth died in Childbirth although I saw no burial for her child Mary who also died. That is not to say it is not there, we only saw a handful of what is hidden under the debris,

If you would like to donate funds, time or supplies to restore and maintain this
cemetery, please contact me for information on donations.
