Wooley Cemetery - Heiberger, Alabama
(AKA - Woolley, Woolley-Edmonds )
Finding Wooley Cemetery might be easy for locals, but don't try to use your GPS to locate it if you are from out of town. Old County Road 47 is closed for the most part in places north of Heiberger and is difficult to navigate. The first sign for Co Rd 47 from the north lane of Hwy 5, turns to the right. this road is old, unused and not well maintained although they did drag the edges to clear brush recently. I'm told to not go here alone as some shady activities go on around that area of the cemetery. I happened to get lucky I suppose and what I didn't know didn't hurt me at the time. Knowing what I do now, I would think twice. The Cemetery itself is being maintained. I am not sure who is doing so but some newer graves are also on the low side of the cemetery over the hill. The history in this cemetery is unlike many that I had visited before. It was exciting and beautiful. Tombstones were in fairly good shape for what is left, and could be easily restored I believe. Many unmarked graves, or graves perhaps whose stones are yet uncovered in the ground are about as this was once a very large cemetery.
