Lile Family Cemetery
This cemetery is now on the Regional Landfill property. I was personally told by an owner about this cemetery and given permission to visit it with an escort. The family is the Lile Family and were buried here on what was their property in Morgan County, Alabama. Their plantation home sat just to the front (to the right looking at the photos) of where the cemetery sits. The farm was a pig farm in later years and the owner who was selling, believed no one would purchase the land if they knew it was a cemetery. So he removed the stones and placed them either beside or below the cement pad for the barn. When the company purchased the land and were removing the buildings, they found the headstones. With a little research they were able to locate the actual burial places, but not where the headstones were supposed to be. Afraid to place them incorrectly, they stacked them up next to each other.
This cemetery has only been publically photographed one other time - when the headstones were found, by a local newspaper writer. (as far as I am aware and can find, anyway). This family is part of my own family as well. A Grandson of the Thomas Lile here in this cemetery started a school and one of the professors from that school, a UVA graduate, went on to create Baylor University. (more info to be posted)
